Meet the Honoree
Steve DeShazo
Steve DeShazo is a Dallas native whose career has been defined by service, culinary and hospitality excellence, and a long-standing commitment to workforce education. Born in Dallas, he spent five years in the U.S. Navy as a cook aboard the USS Guadalcanal, an experience that sharpened his discipline, teamwork, and ability to deliver high-quality results under pressure.
After military service, he built early industry experience in the business, foodservice and hospitality fields, developing a practical understanding of business management, foodservice operations and the standards of professionalism that underpin successful kitchens and dining rooms.
That industry foundation naturally evolved into a passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation. DeShazo brought real-world credibility to high school classrooms, where he helped students connect technical skills with workplace expectations, and he later expanded his impact through college administrator roles at Dallas College. Across these settings, he has been recognized for building strong program pathways, strengthening partnerships with employers, and creating opportunities for students to gain credentials, confidence, and career momentum.
A consistent thread throughout DeShazo’s career has been leadership in student organizations and culinary education initiatives. He has supported SkillsUSA for many years, advocating for career and technical education and helping students compete, grow, and lead. He also played a key leadership role in Texas ProStart from its inception, contributing to the program’s development and reach across the state. In addition, he has served in leadership capacities in numerous local, state, and national organizations, including longtime service on the Board of Directors for the Texas Restaurant Foundation and as Chairman of the Board for the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association.
Steve is married to the love of his life Lira DeShazo. They share 5 children and 3 grandchildren. Steve and Lira retired in 2025 and now live a life of leisure between Dallas and Cartagena, Colombia, enjoying the good life and pursuing their passions to learn about people and cultures and see all the beauty that exists in the world.
