Dallas College Foundation leader and donor
Founder, R. Jan LeCroy Scholarship Program
Dallas businessman Mike Myers says there are two main reasons he’s been such a staunch supporter of Dallas County Community Colleges for the past 25 years. “First, I’m a strong believer in education,” he says. “Second, I’ve always felt that community colleges play a large role in educating the public. We’re educating people who want to be educated.”
Myers has served on the DCCCD Foundation board since 1989 (from 1994 to 1997 as its chairman). In 1988, he created the LeCroy Scholars Program when his long-time friend, R. Jan LeCroy, retired as DCCCD chancellor.
Since then, Myers and LeCroy selected and mentored the LeCroy scholarship recipients each year. The students are chosen for their academic achievement and leadership skills. Dr. LeCroy passed away in October 2013 at the age of 82.
“It has been so exciting to be involved with the LeCroy Scholars program and work with such a bright and gifted group of young people,” he says. “And of course, to have worked with Jan LeCroy all these years has been exceptional. No matter how tough times are, he was always such an upbeat and positive person who inspired others.”
Myers has also been a major benefactor of other Foundation initiatives to support students, employees and programs of the colleges, such as the internationally acclaimed Rising Star Program and the Chancellor’s Council.
Myers credits the quiet but powerful influence of his mother, Audrey Myers, for shaping his drive to serve his community. “She was just the kind of person who was always giving back, and who inspired others around her to do the same,” he says. “I guess that just wears off on you, and I was lucky enough to be her son.”
His strongest hope for the students whom he mentors is a fairly simple one. “Our LeCroy Scholars are already highly motivated people who will no doubt do well in life and achieve their goals,” he says. “But I hope that when they’re in a position to give back on a go-forward basis, that’s what they will do. I’d like for each of them to have the perspective to give back when they’re in the position to do so.”
